All things Sherlockian & Moffatian

Its been two days since His Last Vow and I’m still not ok.

Sherlock isn’t OOC, more likely, your perception of him is.

While there were many things weird, wrong, and lazy about the most recent episode I have to say that Sherlock’s characterization was not one.

I think people forget that canonical Sherlock Holmes, while not sociable or interested in being sociable, was never very rude to strangers. In fact, he could slip into social occasions rather seamlessly. Such, was his mastering of disguises.

Sherlock in ASiP is a Sherlock pre-John Watson, pre- friends, pre-allies, pre-understanding that people could value his eccentricities and not vilify them.

Slowly over two series, Sherlock broke out of the very carefully constructed personal shell, a device of personal protection.

Now here we are. Series three. Sherlock has done battle, alone, for the first time in a long time and we saw in the first episode how it has changed him. He understands what loneliness is, and what acceptance and forgiveness is.

Here, in episode two we get a seemingly OOC Sherlock, but this is not the case. This is a Sherlock that existed before he realized he had to hide his cleverness and oddness.

His actions are more child-like than ever. Dare I say…whimsical?

He wanted to be a pirate, remember. Heroic, blazing, sure-footed, adventurous, and bombastic.

His relationship with John has allowed him to reach back to who he was before he became too afraid to let the world in.

Its not a complete transformation. It’s the start of one.

Before heading to the wedding he said ‘time to get dressed for battle’. He said the same before he went out to “catch” Irene. He sees this wedding as a battle. Another case where he has to don a disguise.

In this case, the disguise of the best man. A position he does not understand nor condone, but something John asks of him and he would never refuse John.

He gets so carried away in the role he lets pieces of himself slip free. His bewilderment at people’s response to his speech, holding his tongue with certain people (like that annoying maid of honor) start prattling away, and admitting he likes to dance.

Ultimately, the disguise only takes him so far. For in a room full of people, some of whom love him very dearly, he is still too far removed and needs to leave. A true tragedy, for in that moment he realizes those relationships that allowed him to be more liberated will change very quickly. And once again he will be alone. He will be the Sherlock from ASiP.
